NEW DELHI, Feb 1: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday sanctioned a grant of Rs 300 crore to the BJP-ruled Government of Goa to celebrate 60 years of the territory's liberation from the Portuguese rule.
The grant is to celebrate the diamond jubilee year, she said while announcing the Centre's largesse
In her 107-minute budget speech, she described the liberation as one of the many important milestones for India's history in 2021.
"It is the 75th year of Independence, 60 years of Goa's accession to India, 50 years of the 1971 India Pakistan war, the year of 8th Cesus of independent India (digitally for the first time), India's turn at the BRICS Presidency, the year of our Chandrayaan-3 Mission and the Haridwar Maha Kumbh," She underlined.
Goa was granted Rs 1,000 crore by late Pranab Mukherjee as then finance minister in 2011 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the liberation.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant was under attack by the opposition parties in Goa for what they saw as a "wasteful" expenditure by the cash-starved state. He had, however, approached the Prime Minister for a central grant to avert this criticism.
