Farmers, political activists block NHW, roads in Jammu

JAMMU, Feb 6: Farmer organisations on Saturday staged a protest on the Jammu-Pathankot National Highway as a part of the nationwide ‘Chakka Jam’ called by protesting farmers.
“We demand implementation of Swaminathan report and guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP) as well as repealing the farm laws,” said Kulwant Singh, member of Jammu Kashmir KisaanVikaas Front.
The protestors blocked the Jammu-Pathankot National Highway at several places including Jammu city which affected the traffic movement for a few hours. The agitating farmers held ‘Chakka Jam’ across the country from 12 Noon to 3 PM on Saturday.
Congress party members held a rally at Narwal Crossing and blocked the Bye Pass road around Noon and disrupted the movement of traffic for a few hours. The police had made adequate arrangements to prevent any untoward incident and allowed the protestors to disperse after holding a demonstration.
In Digiana and Gangyal, the protesting farmers blocked the road disrupting movement of traffic on the road for a few hours. The farmers were joined by various political parties and activists of different civil societies.
Small protests were also organized by the farmers owing allegiance to different organization in R S Pura and Bishnah towns.
Protests were held in several parts of the country during the day with protesters blocking the national highway near Shahjahanpur on the Rajasthan-Haryana border.
Protesters also blocked roads in Amritsar and Mohali in Punjab.
Around 50,000 personnel of Delhi Police, Paramilitary and Reserve Forces were deployed in the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) region to maintain law and order. Heavy deployment of police personnel was also seen at the Red Fort.
